Dear Literary Friends,

The Westchester Fiction Award is currently on hiatus for the foreseeable future due to the Coronavirus.  However, here is some general information about the submission protocol.

In its eleventh year, the Westchester Fiction Award committee consists of a group of secondary school librarians and teachers in Los Angeles Unified School District (Los Angeles, California) and the city/county of Los Angeles and the public library system.

The award celebrates fiction geared to the high school student (teens in grades 9-12, aged 13 - 19) and considers up to ten titles for a gold seal & up to five additional titles for an honorable mention.   The announcement of the literary winners happens in late spring (May or June).  The list of winning titles will be published in national, Los Angeles city, and Los Angeles Unified School District publications and online book purchasing websites.  We are also happy to contact specific agencies of your choosing should you win a Westchester Fiction Award if you wish us to conduct this personalized service.

Because of your exemplary reputation in the young adult publishing field, we are extending an invitation to you to participate in the Westchester Fiction Award by sending us titles in your current and soon-to-be-published collection for consideration.

Please keep the following criteria in mind:

 1.      All fiction must be published between October of the previous year  and December of the current year.

 2.      In order to consider a title,  we must receive the minimum number of copies to be decided upon each year.  This is so we can easily ensure that each book is given the attentive consideration it deserves.

3.      There is no limit to the number of titles you can send at this time as long as you provide the minimum number of copies of each title.

4.      The deadline for submission of all titles this usually the first Monday in December.

We will not be able to consider books that arrive to us after this date, most likely. Please consider shipping time when sending us your nominations and feel free to submit books as they become ready throughout the year.

5.      Unfortunately, we cannot accept advanced reader copies (ARCs).

And while we LOVE reading your non-fiction

submissions, this award explicitly honors FICTION,

so we will not be able to consider any nomination

that isn't part of this genre.

6.      Please send all nominated submissions to our chairperson:

Suzanne Osman

Van Nuys High School

Library

6535 Cedros Avenue

Van Nuys, CA  91411

***Please be advised that the Westchester Fiction Award office is closed from the beginning of June through the middle of August, so in order to ensure the safe and timely receipt of all packages, please schedule all shipments to arrive no earlier than the end of August.  Emails will be responded to throughout the summer, however, so should you have any questions or issues that need more immediate attention, please feel free to contact Suzanne Osman electronically at sosman@lausd.net

We hope you will be inspired by our attempt to honor excellent fiction and authors, motivate young people to read, and highlight the compelling books that you publish.

We look forward to considering your literary treasures.

With kindest regards,

The Westchester Fiction Award Committee
